Taking care of your health is essential to academic success. However, between tight budgets, being far from family, and busy schedules, many students put off seeing a doctor. At the Catholic University of Lille, there are many resources available to ensure that student healthcare is both accessible and high-quality.

What are the options for getting medical care without breaking the bank? Here is a comprehensive guide to the services available to you.

1. The CPSU: Your Go-To Health CenterYou don’t have to travel all over town to see a doctor. The Polyvalent University Health Center (CPSU) is a facility dedicated to students. There, you can see general practitioners, a gynecologist, or male and female nurses. (Provided your health insurance card is up to date)

The main advantage? The university offers direct billing, which means you don’t have to pay upfront. It’s the best way to ensure you receive regular medical care throughout your studies.

2. Mental Health Support for Students: Don’t Go It Alone
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Exam stress or isolation can take a heavy toll. To address these issues, mental health support services have been established.

At the Catholic University, psychologists are available to offer compassionate and confidential support. Specialized counseling sessions provide a safe space to speak openly and find solutions to the challenges you face.

At the CPSU, we have three psychologists; consultations cost €10 for everyone.

3. How can students get a free consultation?
Cost is often the main barrier to seeking care, but at the CPSU, a consultation costs €10. Otherwise, there are ways to get a free consultation or one that is fully covered:

  • Preventive Medicine: As part of your Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC), certain health screenings and preventive exams are completely free.
  • Specialized Services: Certain support centers (such as the Youth Counseling Center) offer free counseling sessions
  • “My Mental Health Support”: At the CPSU, our psychologists can refer you to professionals who participate in this program.

4. Student Health Insurance and Social Security: Understanding Coverage

Since the social security reform, students have been enrolled in the general health insurance system. However, Social Security only covers a portion of medical expenses (usually 70%) if, for example, you are not covered under your parents’ health insurance plan.

To cover out-of-pocket expenses, we strongly recommend enrolling in a student health insurance plan (supplementary health insurance). It is essential for reimbursement of eyeglasses, dental care, and specialist visits. Financial assistance is available to help you pay for this supplementary insurance, such as the Complémentaire Santé Solidaire (CSS).

5. Campus-Specific Services
Student life at Catho benefits from a comprehensive ecosystem through All’s services. On the Health page, you’ll find the CPSU’s hours, emergency contacts, and practical information.

  • Key Takeaways:
Convenience: The health center is located in the heart of the Vauban campus.
  • Prevention: Don’t wait until you’re sick to seek care—preventive checkups are available to you.
  • Support: Whether it’s holistic health, nutrition, or mental well-being, our professionals are specifically trained to address the needs of young people.

In short, student health is a top priority at the Catholic University of Lille. By taking advantage of the CPSU’s resources and learning about your rights (CPAM, supplemental health insurance), you can ensure complete peace of mind throughout your college years.
