Gynaecological consultation

The first gynecological consultation is often dreaded by young girls. Reading this document will allow you to be more relaxed and reassured on the day of this consultation.

FOR WHAT REASONS SHOULD I HAVE A GYNECOLOGICAL CONSULTATION?

There is no specific age to schedule a first gynecological consultation. You can make an appointment for a gynecological consultation if you have questions about your cycle, sexuality, contraception or STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

This can be carried out by a gynecologist, a midwife or your general practitioner.

It is also necessary to consult your doctor if you notice an abnormality such as irregular periods, or pain such as burning when urinating, or any other sign that seems abnormal to you.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE VISIT?

Carefully prepare all the questions you want to ask, possibly in writing so as not to forget any. Make an appointment outside the dates of your period. Wear clothes that are easy to remove. No need to wax, just wash yourself thoroughly.

WILL I NEED TO HAVE A GYNECOLOGICAL EXAM?

During the first visit, the healthcare professional does not systematically perform a gynecological examination. It is above all an interview during which he will ask you how long you have had your period, the date of your last period, if your cycles are regular. But also if you have already had sexual intercourse, if you use contraception, if you have any particular medical problems, and any other questions that may be useful to him in helping you. The healthcare professional will talk to you about vaccination against cervical cancer and its screening by smear test.

HOW IS A GYNECOLOGICAL EXAM PERFORMED?

It is a painless and quick examination. You are placed in the gynaecological position, with your knees bent and your feet in stirrups facing the doctor. The healthcare professional first examines your external genitalia to check that there is no inflammation. If you have already had sexual intercourse, he or she will insert a speculum, an instrument that allows the walls of the vagina to be spread apart in order to examine the cervix. He or she may then perform a screening smear: he or she will collect cells by rubbing them using a specially adapted swab or spatula and will send them to an analysis laboratory. After inspecting the cervix, the doctor will remove the speculum and perform a vaginal examination. He or she will feel your internal genitalia to ensure that they are elastic and that there is no pain. The examination is followed or preceded by a palpation of your breasts: the doctor will ensure that there are no suspicious lumps.

CAN I BE SURE THAT WHAT I'M GOING TO SAY WILL BE CONFIDENTIAL?

The healthcare professional is bound by medical confidentiality. Anything you tell him will therefore not leave his office. You can therefore confide in him anything that concerns you and ask him questions, particularly concerning your sexuality.

WHAT DOES THE GYNAECOLOGIST DO IN ADDITION TO MY PRIMARY DOCTOR?

Your primary care physician or midwife can refer you to the gynecologist to complete his diagnosis or obtain his opinion, because he is a specialist in gynecological problems.
The gynecologist, primary care physician or midwife can provide your gynecological follow-up. Do not hesitate to consult.
