I face the cold

High altitude, polar region excursions or unusual cold snaps, prolonged exposure to negative temperatures can be dangerous for your health. The two main risks are frostbite and hypothermia. To avoid these risks, carefully prepare your outing. Here are some simple tips to follow.

6 good tips to be well prepared for the cold

  • I dress warmly. I first put on a close-fitting garment, then I pile on the layers to finish with a last waterproof and windproof layer.
  • I particularly cover my hands, feet and head (thick gloves, socks, waterproof shoes, hat, scarf).
  • In case of extreme cold, I put a cloth (my scarf for example) over my mouth and nose to avoid inhaling icy air.
  • I eat and drink regularly. I avoid drinking alcohol, which risks masking the symptoms of hypothermia, preventing me from reacting quickly.
  • As soon as I feel cold, I move constantly. Be careful though, I avoid excessive physical effort.
  • I never go out alone in extreme conditions. I always make sure that several people are aware of my route and my departure and return times.
